What the heck happened????

At a BB study, we were discussing that downward spiral we could have stopped at any time before we totally sucked into the "subtle insanity".

One guy offered this take on pgs. 40 & 41:
______________

Picture the "I"s on those pages as dominos stacked in a spiral:

I was confident ...
I reasoned ...
I had been usually successful ...
I [am not like others] ...
I felt ...
I had every right ...
I went about my business ...
I had no trouble ...
I ... began to wonder ...
I went ...
I [had done this] before ...
I felt fine ...
I [had no] problems or worries ...
I was pleased ...
I was at the end of a perfect day ...
I went ...
I crossed the threshold ...
"the thought came to me that it would be nice to have a cocktail ... That's all."
I ordered ...
I decided ...
I returned ...
I stepped into the bar ...
I remember having several more ...
I know little [more] ...
_____________

It also occurred to me later that the next "moments of clarity" were re-stacking the dominos. "I thinking" started my recovery, too, and relapse would start with knocking over the any one of the dominos I've restacked ... working the steps backwards or inside out.

Love,

I once took a close look at that same list of *I* stuff and saw my problem just as clearly, but there was really only one "I" on my own list of accumulated manifestations of *I* thought ... and in my own experience, there was nothing I could ever do to stop the "I" thinking that ultimately took me back to drinking. Rather, my thinking had to be completely redirected from "I" to this:

"Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us."
("A.A.", the book, page 77)
