Dedicated to my Son in Gratitude for being patient enough to show me the results of thoughtless words and actions:
Have you ever wanted a peanut butter and Jelly Sandwich? I mean really wanted one, so bad that you couldn’t think of any thing else. You finally get home; you drop every thing in your hands and head for the Kitchen. Pull every thing out that you need and go to town. You can’t get it made fast enough. Ha, you can finally sit and enjoy what you’ve wanted all day long. You notice that you made it kind of sloppy, because you were in such a hurry. No mind, you eat any way. Your fingers get sticky, and get on every thing you touch. You finish the sandwich and set the plate aside. Your tummy is happy, but your hands are a mess. You are getting peanut butter and jelly on every thing. Finally tired of the mess you get up and get a wet towel to wash your hands, and every thing else you’ve touched. How did just a little bit get all over so much. You pick up the plate and take it to the kitchen. Oh dear, you left the lids to both jars, and the loaf of bread open. You set the plate in the sink and start to clean up the mess. Again, you wonder just how it managed to get all over every thing. You then see all the things you dropped at the door in your rush, and finally stop to pick them up as well.
I see myself like that some times. I go through my day like making that same peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I make comments or take action without a single thought as to the end results. I just wanted to be funny, or intelligent, or just noticed. Then at day’s end, I look back as see the peanut butter and jelly smeared over the whole day. Some times it gets on things that it takes considerable effort to clean up. Some things or people get damaged permanently. Of course this wasn’t my intention, but it was the end result. If I had thought before I took action, I could have had my sandwich without creating havoc for any one else or myself.
I hope that actually writing this down, and admitting it, I can learn to be more thoughtful before I make the sandwich instead of just willing to clean up later.
