I was nervous ( we all were) as an out house mouse my first couple of meetings and sat near the exit door just in case. I got a Big Book and they sent a newcomers package around the room with names of the male members of the group to use as "temporary" sponsors. I prayed a lot which helped me tremendously because I couldn't stop by myself. They told me to go to 90 meetings in 90 days (I objected to this since it wasn’t in the Big Book) but either was no relationship in the 1st year. They (older members) of the group said no major decisions in the first year as well. I listened to the members share to find a good sponsor who had what I wanted. I didn’t know what I would want other than be peaceful and somewhat happy without drinking. They told me what they have is in the Big Book with all the promises in the BB.
I found a sponsor that I knew from before I got sober this time that stressed the steps. He was just what I needed. We got on our knees and did steps 1,2,& 3 right off the bat and told me to start my 4th at once. Then we did my 5th step together. Right from there we kneeled and did steps 6th & 7. I got my 8th step from the 4th step inventory and went to town making amends (With my sponsor’s guidance). Today I work steps 10,11, & 12 and I’m available for newcomers, treasurer of my home group and try to help wherever I can. What a great life I have now. Thank God and the program of AA.
Good luck to you.
