Hospitalization and detox meds for alcoholics?

"Though we work out our solution on the spiritual as
well as an altruistic plane, we favor hospitalization
for the alcoholic who is very jittery or befogged.
More often than not, it is imperative that a man’s brain be
cleared before he is approached, as he has then a better
chance of understanding and accepting what we have
to offer."
Page xxiv, 3rd Edition, Dr."s Opinion -- Alcoholics Anonymous.

While the professional community often gets battered in
local AA discussion meetings -- (and there are sometimes, that they may deserve the chatter)
it is clear that AA, the Founders & the Book, favored hospitalization
for alcoholics in the early days of sobriety -- to at least get their mind
defogged from alcohol -- before they made an approach.

It is suggested, in the AA Big Book, and the AA 12 Traditions --
that AA members do not give medical advice or opinion in regards
to medicine. We're not doctors. We're not professionals.
We have simply found a solution -- that has worked for us.

Dr. Bob, was a doctor. He and Bill, and the early newcomers in
Akron, when AA was just getting started -- preferred to hospitalize
newcomers at first, usually for about a week or two -- while older
AA members would visit the alcoholic patient in the hospital
and give them a welcome, tell their own story, and orient them
in the AA program.

If the new alcoholic wanted the AA solution -- they began immediately,
while in the hospital to introduce them to what later became the "AA 12 Steps."
