April 1840

A bunch of six drinking buddies (William Mitchell, John Hoss, David Anderson, George Steers, James McCurley and Archibald Campbell) in Chasels Tavern at Baltimore, started a total abstinence society.

They took an oath "not drink any spirituous or malt liquors, wine or cider" and decided to call themselves the Washington Temperance Society (in honor of George Washington). They became known as Washingtonians. They looked for new members ("hard cases") and had weekly meetings in the bar. Eventually the owner's wife complained about the increasing loss of all their best customers. They charged a 25-cent joining fee ($5 today) and monthly dues of 12 ½ cents per month ($2.50 today).

Very interesting, Geoff. I learned a few new things about AA history. To echo others, hope you'll do this again in May.
