May 12, the Washingtonians held the first Martha Washington Society meeting for women and children in NY. They provided moral guidance and material support to sober up female drunks and assisted the wives and children of male drunks. This was the first temperance movement where women held leadership posts. The movement also lead to young peoplesâ€™ groups. Free blacks started separate Washingtonian societies
May, Bill W began officerâ€™s training at Plattsburg, NY. After eight weeks of artillery training at Ft Monroe, VA, Bill was a second lieutenant in the 66th Artillery Corps and went to Ft Rodman outside of New Bedford, MA.
