Cactus Cal was newly sober, broke and unemployed. With his sponsor's help he was able to find a part-time minimum-wage job.
After cashing his first paycheck he picked out some used but serviceable clothing at a local second-hand thrift store. On his arrival home he discovered a five-year-old shoe repair claims ticket in the pocket of the pants he had just purchased.
The shoe size on the repair ticket was the exact size that Cactus Cal wore. He couldn't believe his good luck. He hopped on a bus to take him to the A-1 Shoe Repair across town.
"I'm hear to claim these shoes", Cal said, handing the repair ticket to the clerk. The clerk headed to the back of the store and was gone for almost 30 minutes. Cal paced the floor.
The clerk finally returned and handed the ticket back to Cal. "I'm sorry", he said, but you'll have to come back." Your shoes won't be ready until next Tuesday.
