He was once a championship bodybuilder and successful property owner. But when he turned 30, Derek felt he was over the hill and became severely depressed. He started drinking to cope with the pressures of marriage and the responsibilities of getting older. His beautiful wife left, and now Derek's days are all the same--he sits in his dark basement, smoking and drinking and bemoaning the loss of his wife. He narrowly survived one suicide attempt and his family is worried he'll try again. An intervention is their last hope.

Maybe I am. ;) But seriously, you are correct and I apologize for getting worked up. . .my opinion was just an opinion, probably based on that fact that I had just finished reading a text on sociopathy and was probably "looking" for it everywhere. He just seemed so cold and callous to me, but as you said, there are many other factors that play into that kind of behavior.

god he's so annoying. i feel bad for him but he still annoys the crap out of me. i wouldn't want to be in a room with him

havent you guys maybe thought about the fact that he's an addict since you guys are trying to diagnos his behavior and personality, hes an addict, addicts are master manipulators they say and do what ever they can to get what they need, the depression would be caused by the alcohol. its hard to understand an addict and there behaviors if you arent one. im just saying this because i was there at one time i am a recovering addict though now

and as far as my 'diagnosis' goes.... its not a diagnosis at all: This is my opinion based on the very limited information presented. Notice, it is the same information which you deemed sufficient enough to label him a 'sociopath.' The purpose of the breakdown was to indicate 1. That he does not present sociopathy from what limited info is available and that a far more compassionate and complex description is in order. My opinion of what that description should contain is: My opinion. Diagnosis?
VeritasTruthEmet (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Im not a doctor. He meets none of the 'criteria' for a 'sociopath' and your insensitive labeling concerns me. Maybe you are a 'sociopath'?
mukwise (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I hardly think you can "diagnose" this dude from the DSM IV by only watching him on a show once. I was just making the observation that he appears to fit the description of a sociopath. Calm down. And your knowledge of DSM IV does not impress me.

If you want to throw around psychological terminology, know what your saying. This person presents serious disorders with much comorbidity. However, he is not at FAULT. You cannot treat a patient as being BAD, he did not choose this.I was to add to what I posted below. Upon further review I believe that he also presents all the symptoms of comorbidObessive Compulsive PERSONALITY DISORDER (NOT OCD).OCPD MDD BDD with PD (NOS?) and, of course, substance abuse w/ suicidal ideation.
VeritasTruthEmet (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
NOT sociopath. U want a proper diag according to DSM IV?1. MDD Unipolar Major Depressive Disorder2. BDD (Comorbidity) Body Dysmorphic Disorder3. PD (NOS) Personality Disorder (Not Otherwise Specified)4. Presentation (Objective)-Sexual implications (possible repressed homosexuality)-Manipulative tendencies-Narcissism (~NPD)-Hystrionic tendencies (~HPD)Possible ID on Personality Disorder NOS-Hystrionic PD &/or NPD with BDD & MDDCon: Serious Mortality Risk, Substance Abuse: Form 1 him.
